Something Special

Something Special

This is my letter the day of Zephie’s surgery. This process has taken so much more than I could ever imagine to process. I have tears when I read this. I am amazed at how articulate I was in a time of such deep stress. I am incredibly thankful that my husband encouraged me to write this during that time even if it took me 6 months to publish it. I also think this is the perfect spot to thank everyone in our community that loved on us, supported us, prayed for us, donated to our Go Fund Me, brought us meals, made her cards, Brought Lux and Lylah gifts, and sent us good healing vibes. It all was seen and felt, and we are incredibly grateful for it! thank you! Life has been speeding by since her surgery and there is still so much to reflect on. I hope you enjoy this little piece. I will continue to share more as it gets processed!

The Day her spine would become straight…

Each and every time I share this sweet girls story I am humbled to think I am her mother. It is such a gift in life, that I never forget it.

A few things have changed since our last big update. Miss Z is currently in the operating room, and things are going well. She woke up early this morning in amazing spirits and a motivation that appeared she knew she was ready to climb the mountain in front of her. I woke up this morning with this incredible sensation of strength, and calmness. It confused me to be quite honest. I have to take a moment to thank everyone for all the love, support, prayers, good vibes, energy of love, and messages we have received. Every one of them has helped tremendously. I know it has helped to give us the strength Zephie was feeling this morning.

Let’s  rewind a bit…

I received a call late last week from her surgeon that they were changing their approach to her surgery. After a group of surgeons and the Medical Director discussed her case and reviewed her images they decided that she would need her thoracic spine corrected now as well. The nature of progression from the short amount of time they have seen her did not look compensatory like they originally diagnosed. Instead it is structural. A structural curve therefore will not straighten out by fixing only her lumbar spine. Since she was beginning to have set backs with breathing, they decided she should have both curves fixed at once. Last measured a few months ago her lumbar spine was at a curve of 100 degrees, the thoracic measured at 80 degrees. Which was a large increase from the first measurement of the thoracic being 60 degrees. We are grateful they were so thorough with her case and really took all the possibilities into account. The prognosis long term will be so much better for her this way, avoiding the second fusion. It will make the recovery period a bit harder, but we know she is ready to work through that. With the support of all of you, we are too!

Zephie is this magical soul, that is so well loved. There truly is something unique about her that I just don’t have the words to describe. She gives love so freely. To think that her spine is curved so much in two spots and she doesn’t complain of daily pain, just sounds “off” in my mind. I believe she has lived with daily pain for quite some time, and just didn’t know how to express it. Having that nature of not wanting others to be concerned about her for anything.  This is definitely where the tricky part of her expressive language comes into play. She understands completely everything going on around her, but the way she expresses it is unique and requires our very consistent attention to be aware. We didn’t start this spinal journey because she was complaining of pain or diagnosed by a doctor for needing it. It was our advocacy as parents that demanded the referral for her to be assessed. Grateful every day for her voice and ours. Up until yesterday she showed no signs of fear or nerves in any way. Yesterday it was starting to settle in and she was handling it like this amazing wise soul. I’m so proud of her. I want her to know today when I see her that its ok not to be strong sometimes. We can lean onto others. Love is definitely surrounding us! We are always there for her that sweet gem. She continues to sprinkle magic in whatever she does!

She has been in surgery for 9 hours now and we are anxiously awaiting the call that they are finished. I reminded the Surgeon this morning that we appreciate her taking her time, and are so grateful for a meticulous Surgeon taking care of her! We have heard that she is doing well, and everything is going fine. It will be a long night with lots of snuggles and love!

Her Monkey named Bear, was the most comforting item for us to squeeze those long 10 hours!

We will give updates here as we can throughout her journey. We appreciate everyones support, love, prayers and well wishes! We have immense gratitude for you!

Current Hair Routine

Hair, we love it or we hate it! Am I right? Since switching up my routine and being on a regular schedule for a trim. I seem to be on the “love it” train more often! Let me tell you my secrets!  I like to share!

I am not a hair stylist, this is simply my experience! Enjoy it and try what feels right to you!

My first secret to gorgeous locks is, not washing it! What?!?!?! Yep! The more days you can get your hair and scalp to stretch between washes, the happier and healthier your hair will be! The trick is figuring out what your hair and scalp need to get you to that extended period between washes without offending your friends!

The first thing I did years ago when I began this was I would go every other day for a while until my hair felt like it wasn’t greasy and could go another day. To stretch that 3rd day you can try using a  dry shampoo like Primally pure, and putting it into a braid or ponytail. Whatever you can stand for a day! Just try to go one day farther than you usually do. Then wash! Continue this method until you are at the amount of days you desire to skip between washes! I am currently at about 4 or 5 days on average! I exercise 4-5 days a week and do intense cardio half of those days. Sweating should not disrupt your wash routine!

I use Beautycounter’s Daily shampoo and conditioner. The name makes me giggle, because I definitely never wash my hair daily! The name does imply the shampoo and conditioner to be simple, effective and gentle enough for often use! They deliver!

Our hair has natural oil in it called sebum. The sebum is a protective coat on your hair and it wants to help you out! So let it! Sometimes if I feel like a workout really got my hair salty I do a rinse only. That usually gets me by one more day with a blow dry or French braid!

My next secret to gorgeous hair, is hair oil! What?!?! Yep, again! Hair oil is a secret of mine that until now I only shared with my closest friends. Ok, I Kid I kid! Hair oil first came into my routine probably 7 years ago. When it was used more as a heat protector for blow drying and hair straighteners. Then I evolved with the product! I discovered that if I only put the oil on my hair tips when blow drying my hair it would distribute itself properly! On second and third day hair if my tips feel dehydrated I add a little again before curling my hair. I find this second coat to be very nourishing, right when my hair needs it.

Hair routine day 1. So fresh!!

I have a couple of hair oils I like to use. Beautycounter’s hair serum can be used in this way. I do find their actual hair oil to be a little too intense for my hair and can’t seem to get just a little in my hair to work. It ends up being too greasy for me.  I also use a hair oil from Davines. They are another B-corp company like Beautycounter. They are making efforts to be sustainable and responsible in their business! Considering people, the planet and business in many avenues. I do think their products are high performing, but I wish they would eliminate fragrance and a few other questionable ingredients like those used in their aerosol products. It’s a lot about progress not perfection in the cleaner, safer beauty movement at this time. I hope to look back at this post in 10 years and be proud of the progressive and  positive change that occurred!

The natural oils in your hair with the dry shampoo give me some pretty good volume. I am careful to use too many hair products since the hair part of the beauty industry does not have nearly as many options as the make-up and skin care world. My typical hair styling routine is wash and blow dry on day one. I do use a heat protection spray followed by the hair straightener. Day two through four I curl it with a 1 1/4 inch barrel curling iron where needed so it has a full body curl! Using my hair serum/oil when needed for dry ends. This helps me to have soft movable, full-bodied curls! On the rare occasion I use a little hair spray if I want my curls too stay precise for longer into the day. My favorite options for a light movable hold hair spray are Beautycounter’s Volumizing mist, Root Pretty, and Innersense.

Additional things I add to my daily routine that I think help my hair health is Vitamin E, collagen peptides, and plenty of good ole’ water! I am definitely not a Naturopath or Doctor so please seek medical advice if you choose to add vitamins and supplements into your routine!

Hair routine on Day 3. This is my favorite hair day! The perfect balance between full-body curls, softness and natural oils!

So there it is my frequently asked for gorgeous locks’ routine! I hope you find this helpful! Please share if you too have found certain cleaner safer products to be effective in your own hair care routine!

Have a Beautiful Day lovelies!

Her Birth

Her Birth

The night before the induction I could hardly sleep. You know those times in life you go to bed and tell yourself “you need lots of sleep tonight” Then you don’t sleep at all. The anticipation, excitement, nerves, the adventure you are trying to completely absorb it all!  Never having experienced birth, but hearing all my friends stories of bliss, excitement and those feelings you jut can’t put into words.  We would be parents in a measurable and definitive amount of time now. A dream finally becoming a reality. At this point we were both assured whatever this moment brought us, we knew for certain that joy and gratitude would certainly be included.

We arrived at the hospital bright and early in the morning to begin the induction. Due to many babies being born that early morning we did a lot of waiting that morning. I did all the preparations on my Birth Plan. I set everything up I might need. Then you just sit and wait and wonder what is to come in the nearing hours. How will you react to the moment? Will it all go according to your plan? Is it really in your control what is happening? What will the baby look like? Will she have hair? What will her cry sound like? what did the high blood pressure my body was experience mean? Would it affect the baby? And all the other million questions a new mom asks herself! We sat and waited for what felt like forever! The fine details have been lost upon my memory like what time I was given pitocin, and cervidil. I find this a blessing that the little things in life we think matter so much are easily lost upon us. I went in feeling like I didn’t want any medications, but now its lost upon me what some of them may have even been. I do recall the morning of the birth and although I felt relatively calm, and excited at the same time my blood pressure was very high. That was assurance that even though we were delivering the baby at 37 weeks exactly and I wished she could stay in longer, our bodies were too stressed and it was time. I seemed to not make progress very quickly. I had a few contractions, but nothing like the intense pain my mind thought I’d be feeling. We did the baths, and rolling on the exercise balls. We walked the halls of the hospital, which was fun since that was also my place of employment at the time. We watched a movie together. I took a nap. It all sounds so exciting to recall! Next is is the part when the doctor broke my water. If I told this part of the story in person I would emphasize how this was the most painful part to me. It was not a simple process. My water didn’t want to break and I recall being in a lot of pain from the numerous failed attempts. It was finally successful. However, this didn’t seem to speed things up much either, just brought more irritable pains! I feel like my already anxious self let this pain lead me into a state of fear for what what was ahead. I had never heard that part would hurt. In fact most said they couldn’t feel it at all.  Then in the late afternoon when things were still not progressing the doctor came in and said we needed a new plan. It wasn’t safe for me to wait it out with dangerously high blood pressure any longer. So she felt if my body could relax with an epidural perhaps I’d start making progress. I didn’t want one, I still to this day don’t like it was what had to be. However, I knew I wanted more children and my fear of a caesarean section and complicated future births was an even bigger fear than the epidural. So we proceeded. Once I had the epidural my contractions very quickly and rapidly picked up. Fast and furiously. I don’t recall much time between that and the start of pushing. During her birth there were more interventions I needed. Oxygen for her heart rate dropping drastically during the pushing phase, at some point we also had to  use the vacuum suction on her head to assist the birth.

She was finally born at 7pm in the evening. The moment your baby is born and they put her on your chest you just well up with all the most intense feelings. You finally have that baby you have waited so long for. You feel her, smell her and see her. Its surreal. It is by far the most beautiful feeling of joy you can experience. Birth is no small feat. They relate it to preparing for a marathon for a reason. There were many times while I was pushing I thought I wouldn’t make it through. I guess you know you will, but it feels otherwise in so many physical and emotional ways! Once she was born I just wanted to hold her, I didn’t want to let her go. I had this intense urge to protect and shelter her. It was a conflicting feeling. One I don’t often share I had. It was that same feeling I still hold to this day each and every time someone meets her. The fear of judgement upon your child is real. One you have little control over. When you know your child isn’t the same as the general population that fear comes with a shield. One you learn and grow to respect and appreciate. That shield has a purpose, but if it isn’t used gracefully can hinder our growth as humans.

Even though I was proud I could not ignore the intense feeling that this wasn’t a typical baby, she was different. She was beautiful, she was perfect, she was my baby, but something about her was not like the rest of us. In that first hour of looking and holding and loving on her I immediately decided I had a job to do, to uncover these feelings I had been having the entire pregnancy.  I would do it through love, I would show the world that this tiny human was meant to make a big impact on the world.

We can be different, yet exactly the same. I would trust all those gut instincts I had. I knew in my heart she was born ours because she trusted us to show her this world the way she wanted to live it. She chose us as her parents to carry out her dreams and wishes. If she chose me, there was no way I could back down from the job!

It wasn’t long before I noticed her little tiny ears had these bubbles of skin on them. The nurse and doctor saw it too. They assured us they are just skin tags and many people are born with them. I remember one of the nurses saying her son had one as well and it was easily removed. They are completely cosmetic we were told. My first reaction was that this was a visual sign my gut feelings did in fact mean something. However, it didn’t look emergent, so I put a hat on her and let the day move on! We had a new baby to learn all about, to love on, and learn how to care for!

She was a tiny little babe, weighing in at only 4 pounds 8 ounces, and 17 inches in length. She passed her initial Apgar test at birth. Things were going along so smoothly, so calm and peaceful now that she was here with us. She was given a quick little bath, and we wrapped her up like a burrito and continued to nurse, and rest together. It seemed at first that she had a fantastic latch and was feeding like a champ. She nursed for a good two hours. The nurses all commented that we must both be natural pros at this new mom and baby gig. So we were transferred to the regular postpartum suites. We were lucky enough to get the large suite at the end of the hall! The bliss of a new baby doing all the things she should seemed to be taking a turn once we arrived to our room. Things started being questioned, and the fears and anxieties started to rise late into the night and early morning. The tiny little healthy baby started failing tests, and we needed more support. Her first few days seemed to be a steady trend for her first early months of life.

We continued to hold onto the fact that love would get us through all of this. Together and with love this little girl had a chance to be exactly who she wanted. She was making it very clear from conception through pregnancy and birth that she was a determined soul ready to conquer the world regardless of whatever it was making her different!
